Borehole drilling is one of the best investments you will ever make!   However, to get the best experience you need to understand the borehole drilling critical factors.  Consequently, this will ensure that you will receive a great product and service!

1. WATER LOCATION

These should give you a pretty accurate picture of whether you’re located in a borehole drilling area.

An important consideration as well is to ensure that your property is big enough to accommodate a drill rig.

2. THE DRILLING CONTRACTOR

Once you’ve established that you’re in a borehole area it’s time to start looking for a drilling contractor.  This can feel overwhelming as there is a vast selection to choose from.

Some key elements to consider are:

  • References – ensure that you ask any drilling contractor you use for references from previous clients.  This will give you a good overall impression of the contractor and the quality of their work.
  •  Ask what type of casing will be utilized.  The type of sand on the property will determine this.  
  • Check the diameter of the borehole.  Note that the size of a standard, household borehole is 152mm in diameter.
  • Ensure that your contractor will cap the hole once drilling is complete.  This is to stop any dirt and rubbish from getting into the borehole.

3. THE CLIENT

It’s important to bear in mind that even if you live in a borehole area, the contractor is not able to guarantee that you will find water.   The client remains responsible to pay for the drilling even if water is not found.

Borehole drilling is noisy and time-consuming.  It’s considerate to notify close neighbours that you will be drilling so they have the opportunity to go out for the day or work around it.
