Cape Town water restrictions

Cape Town water restrictions are a pertinent issue.  Who can forget the drought of recent years? Additionally,  we well remember the terror we lived with.

As a result, we’ve all become very aware of using water responsibly.  Consequently, to strengthen this effort we all need to be aware of the water restrictions and abide by them.

However, you may be confused or unsure of the levels of the water restrictions.  Therefore, you may not be certain what you can and can’t do.  As a result, it can undermine your water-saving efforts.  Therefore, we are providing a breakdown of the water restrictions levels in Cape Town at a glance.  Subsequently, this should make it easier to understand which level we’re on and what the restrictions are.

Initially, from the 1st of July 2019, Cape Town started using a new water restriction system.  As such,  it outlines the water restrictions in a simple way.  To clarify, this system has 5 levels.  Additionally, each level has certain restrictions.  As a result, at a glance, you are easily able to determine the current restrictions.

A full breakdown of each of these levels can be found on the City of Cape Town page.

The levels of the water restriction system are Zero, level 1 – level 3, and Emergency. To clarify, Cape Town is currently on level 1 water restrictions.

LEVEL 1 RESTRICTIONS

According to level 1 restrictions, you may water with a hosepipe or sprinkler system for 1 hour per day on a Tuesday and Saturday.  This applies to Sports fields and parks too. However, the water days are Tuesday and Friday.  Additionally, you may also water with a bucket or watering can without restriction.

In terms of swimming pools, you may fill them provided that you adhere to Councils requirements.  To clarify, your swimming pool must be covered when not in use to avoid evaporation.

Private car washes and informal car washes may operate with the use of a bucket or a high pressure/low volume cleaner.  On the other hand, Commerical car washes can run without any restrictions.

Finally, water features are allowed without restrictions.

DAM LEVELS THAT IMPACT CAPE TOWN WATER RESTRICTIONS

In Cape Town our dam levels are affected by the following dams:

  • The Berg River
  • Steenbras Lower,
  • The Steenbras Upper
  • Theewaterskloof
  • The Voelvlei
  • Wemmershoek

To clarify, as of 28 August 2020, the Cape Town dams storage stands at 88.7%.

As a result, this is good news indeed! However, we must always remain water-wise.  While we can definitely celebrate the increase, on the other hand, we cannot become complacent.  Consequently, we need to keep being diligent about saving water.  Above all, there are many ways to save water.  As a result, we need to keep this in mind and keep saving water.

CONSIDER AN ALTERNATIVE WATER SOURCE

Despite the water restrictions, we are all still trying to keep our gardens and homes in good condition.  However, watering gardens and filling pools takes a lot of water.  As a result, we are faced with a bit of a conundrum.  How do we do this while staying within the water restrictions?

However, there are alternative water sources that can be used for this.  A wellpoint or borehole installation is a great way to meet your needs while staying within the water restrictions.

Additionally, there are many benefits to having your own borehole.  Firstly, it helps save our limited council water.  Secondly, it is one of the best ways to become water-wise.  Thirdly, it can save you money on your water bill.  As a result, it enables you to do your bit towards saving our precious water.  And that’s the main focus right now! Fourthly, installing a borehole can also add value to your property.  In conclusion, it has numerous benefits.

Overall, there are many benefits to having your own borehole.  However, right now the top benefit is that it can help save council water.  As a result, it’s something we all need to weigh up and consider.

In conclusion, it’s critical to have alternative water sources these days.  As a result of water restrictions and interruptions to council supply, it’s important to have other options.  Borehole drilling in Cape Town is a smart choice.  Contact us today for your free quotation.
