GROUND WATER: DO I NEED A WELLPOINT OR A BOREHOLE?

Are you considering an alternative water source?  Then accessing ground water is something to consider. Accessing Ground water can be done through a wellpoint or borehole.

Each option has its own set of benefits. The benefits of a borehole are as follows:

  • Helps you save potable water
  • Saves money on your water bill
  • Increases the value of your property
  • Enables you to fill your pool
  • Can be used to irrigate and water your garden
  • Enables off-the-grid living

A wellpoint offers the following benefits:

  1. It’s cost-effective to install
  2. Saves you money on your water bill
  3. It adds great value to your property
  4. It is quick to install
  5. Helps you save potable water
  6. Can be consumed once tested and treated
  7. You can fill your pool (provided you do a water analysis and treat the water)
  8. You can run your irrigation and water your garden
  9. Gives you a secure water source
  10. Uninterrupted supply of water

As you can see both options offer a wide array of benefits. As a result, you may well be wondering how to decide which option is right for you.  There are 3 important factors to consider which will help make your decision.

1. LOCATION OF GROUND WATER

Your location is a very important factor when considering a wellpoint or borehole.  The depth of the water table determines whether you can have a borehole or wellpoint.  An area that is close to the water table would work for a wellpoint.  By contrast, areas with a deeper water table would need a borehole.

2. TYPE OF SOIL FOR GROUND WATER

A wellpoint works best with sandy soil that has a porous structure.  But a borehole can be drilled into any type of soil and rock.  So if you are in an area that does not have porous soil and a deeper water table then you should consider a borehole

3. BUDGET

A wellpoint goes no deeper than 15m and costs around R8 500.00. By contrast, a borehole can go as deep as 80m and costs between R30 000 – R180 000.

An alternate water source is always a good idea. The above-mentioned factors can help you decide if you need a wellpoint or borehole. Whichever option you decide on,  you will be making the best investment and ensuring water security!
