HOW DEEP SHOULD A BOREHOLE BE?

A Borehole is an incredible asset to any property.  This is true in a number of ways. Firstly, the garden of the property will be lush and beautiful because you will be able to water it thoroughly and regularly with borehole water. Secondly, a borehole helps you save money on your water bill.  Thirdly, it also provides water security which is something we desperately need as South Africans.  These are just two reasons it’s an excellent idea to invest in a borehole.  If you are thinking of drilling a borehole then the question may have crossed your mind, “how deep should a borehole be?”.  Read on!

The depth of a borehole depends on how deep the aquifer (water-bearing rock) is located underground on your property.  If it’s closer to the ground surface, then the borehole won’t be too deep.  Alternatively, if it’s far from the ground surface, then the borehole will need to be drilled deeper.

WHAT FACTORS AFFECT THE DEPTH OF A BOREHOLE

As a result, the factors that affect how deep a borehole should be are:

  1. Your geographical location
  2. The underlying geology of your region

In general, though, the average depth of a borehole is between 80m – 120m but will vary based on the above 2 factors.

There are so many excellent benefits to having a borehole:

  • A borehole increases the value of your property
  • It helps you save potable water
  • A borehole will save you money on your water bill
  • You can run your irrigation system with borehole water
  • It provides you with water security
  • You can fill your pool with borehole water (provided it is tested and treated accordingly)
  • A borehole allows for off-the-grid living.
