PLANTING REQUIREMENTS FOR PLUM TREES

A fruit tree is always a welcome addition to any garden.  Here in the Western Cape, we can grow an excellent variety of fruit trees.  Citrus fruit trees, stone fruit trees and grapes all grow very well here.  We’ve explored citrus fruit trees and their planting requirements in a previous blog.  Let’s look now at the planting requirements for Plum trees which are known as stone fruit trees.

PLUM TREE PLANTING GUIDE

  • Plum trees should be planted in late Winter or early Spring.
  • Use a loamy, well-drained soil.
  • Plant in a location that receives at least 6 – 8 hours of direct sun
  • If you plant more than one Plum tree then make sure you space them 3m – 6m apart.
  • The size of the hole you dig needs to be a bit deeper and wider than the spread of the roots.
  • When placing the tree in the hole shake the roots a bit to untangle the roots of the root ball.
  • Water the tree well when it’s planted and then water frequently in the first weeks after planting.
  • An established Plum tree should be watered once a week.

When growing fruit trees it’s essential to water them regularly.  It can become expensive to do this with council water.  As a result, it’s important to consider investing in a borehole.  To help you weigh up your decision to invest in a borehole let’s look at the advantages of a borehole.

BENEFITS OF A BOREHOLE

  • A borehole increases the value of your property
  • It helps you save potable water
  • A borehole helps you save money on your water bill
  • You can fill your pool with borehole water once treated appropriately
  • You can use borehole water for your irrigation system
  • It gives you water security
  • It allows off-the-grid living

As you can see a borehole comes with so many great benefits. However, the top two benefits are that it will save you money on your water bill and give you water security. In today’s world these are truly incredible benefits that make this investment very worthwhile. In addition, it’s important to note that the initial financial outlay will more than pay for itself over the years while you enjoy your borehole water. It’s so worth it!
