WHAT VEGGIES CAN BE PLANTED IN JUNE?

One of the most essential skills we can acquire is learning how to grow our own food.  Eating food we grow ourselves means eating veggies full of nutrients.  And ultimately this just means better health.  It’s a real win-win.  But with the start of winter, you may be wondering what veggies can be planted in June.  Read on!

In June, you can plant leeks, cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, kale, onions, cauliflower, turnips, radish, and spinach.

When it comes to growing veggies, the most important thing to remember is the soil you plant in.  It needs to be healthy, living soil.  You can build healthy soil by adding compost, so keep your compost heap going.

In addition, when you make your plant beds doing layers will build your soil.  Start with a layer of cardboard, then add compost, a layer of organic matter, and more compost, and finally top it off with mulch.  These layers will decompose over time, resulting in a healthy, living soil that will produce excellent veggies.

Let’s take a look now at some of the benefits of having a veggie garden:

BENEFITS OF A VEGGIE GARDEN

  • You eat fresh, organic veggies.
  • It saves you money on your food bill.
  • It gives you exercise.
  • Working in a veggie garden helps to lower your stress levels.
  • It reduces the amount of packaging materials you use.
  • Homegrown veggies taste delcious.
  • You can sell or share your surplus veggies.

As you can see growing your own veggies is so rewarding and it’s surprising to realise it’s easier than you may think! The best way is to start small and gain confidence with a few types of veggies and over time you can expand this.

As always, a critical component for any veggie garden is regular watering. An automated irrigation system can take all the hassle out of this.
