HOW DOES A BOREHOLE WORK?

We face very real threats to our water supply in South Africa. As a result, water security has become increasingly essential for those of us living in South Africa.  For many years we have dealt with droughts and water shortages.  In addition, there are also constant issues with council water pipes leaking.  As a result, all of this just leaves us needing to investigate alternative sources of water like a borehole.  But how does a borehole work?

A borehole is a narrow, deep hole drilled into the ground using specialised drilling equipment.  As a result, you are able to access your deep underground water supply.

Drilling a borehole is a process that involves the following key steps:

1. Choosing the best location

You cannot drill a borehole anywhere. The contractor will take certain factors into consideration when choosing the location. Some of these factors include the availability of water and how easily the drilling rig can access it. As a result, people often drill a borehole on the driveway of a property.

2. Drilling the hole

The contractor uses a drilling rig to drill the borehole.  He determines the depth of the hole based on the depth of the water located in the underground aquifers.

3. Insert the casing

The contractor inserts casing pipes into the borehole. This is to prevent it from collapsing. In addition, the casing also isolates the borehole from surrounding aquifers which keeps the water clean.

4. Flushing the borehole

Now the drilling crew flushes the borehole to expel any sediment or debris.

Now that we’ve looked at how a borehole works, let’s explore the advantages of a borehole.

BENEFITS OF A BOREHOLE

  • A borehole increases the value of your property
  • It helps you save potable water
  • A borehole helps you save money on your water bill
  • You can fill your pool with borehole water once treated appropriately
  • You can use borehole water for your irrigation system
  • It gives you water security
  • It allows off-the-grid living

Now that we’ve looked at the benefits of a borehole you can see it’s an excellent investment. However, a borehole is not only an excellent investment but is also rapidly becoming essential now in South Africa.
