HOW DOES ACTIVATED CHARCOAL FILTRATION WORK?

Clean water is one of the essentials of life and not something we can take for granted.  That’s so true for those of us living in Cape Town.  We’ve recently been warned by the council to boil our water before drinking it.  As a result, this has left us feeling uncertain about the quality of our tap water.  Thankfully, water filtration provides a solution for this.  And in particular, activated charcoal filtration is a very effective way to purify our tap water.   But how does activated charcoal filtration work?

Activated charcoal filtration is also known as carbon filtration.  Activated charcoal is a type of carbon that has been treated with high temperatures.  As a result, it has a porous structure with a large surface area.  This allows it to attract and absorb a variety of impurities from the water.  When they pass through the filtration system they are trapped within the micropores of the charcoal.  As a result, it is an effective way to purify water.

Now that we’ve looked at how activated charcoal filtration works let’s look at the benefits of water filtration.

THE BENEFITS OF WATER FILTRATION

  • Healthier drinking water
  • Removal of contaminants
  • Improved taste and odour
  • It is eco-friendly
  • Cost-effective
  • Protects plumbing and appliances
  • Reduces plastic waste
  • Enhances cooking and beverages

Water filtration is an investment that is fast becoming essential due to concerns about the quality of our water. As a result, it’s worth the outlay because it gives us peace of mind that our water is clean. Unclean water affects health detrimentally and can carry diseases like cholera, diarrhoea, hepatitis A and typhoid. These are serious diseases that can affect our health negatively. Therefore, it’s important that we take every precaution we can to filter and treat our water so that it’s safe for consumption.
