THE THREE TYPES OF SAND FILTERS

We all understand the value of having access to clean water. The drought of recent years in Cape Town has forcibly reinforced this to us. As a result, more and more people are investing in boreholes and water filtration. When it comes to water filtration sand filtration is the first line of defence to purify water. Sand filtration cleans the water as it moves through the sand by trapping debris and pollutants in the sand. As a result, the water is filtered and cleaned. But did you know there are three types of sand filters used in sand filtration? Read on!

The three types of sand filters used in sand filtration are gravity, upward flow and slow sand filters.

1. GRAVITY SAND FILTER

With a gravity sand filter water flows through the top of the sand filter.  As it moves downwards through the layers of sand and gravel debris and pollutants are trapped and removed from the water.  As a result, the water is filtered and cleaned.

2. UPWARD FLOW SAND FILTERS

Upward flow sand filters work in much the same way as gravity sand filters.  The difference, however, is that the water is pushed upward instead of downward through the layers of filtration media (sand and gravel).  As a result, as the water passes through the sand and gravel, the impurities are removed from the water.

3. SLOW SAND FILTERS

With slow sand filters the water passes through a bed of fine sand at a very slow rate.  Over time a biofilm develops on the surface of the sand.  This biofilm is made up of beneficial microorganisms that help to break down and consume pathogens in the water.  As a result, the water is clean once it has moved through this filter.

Water is life! Consequently, it will always be a good idea to invest in a borehole and water filtration!
