Establishing a veggie garden is a fantastic solution to have organic veggies to eat. So many South Africans are feeling the pinch nowadays and we all know that it can be pricy to buy fresh, organic veggies. That’s why growing your own is a great option. And it’s a lot simpler to do than you may think. An important thing to remember with a veggie garden is that you need to do succession planting. But what is succession planting?
Succession planting means that you stagger your planting so that you have continual harvests throughout the growing season. An important principle to remember is that with succession planting you must plant the next load of seeds when you start to harvest from the first ones you planted.
CAN YOU PLANT ALL CROPS IN SUCCESSION?
It’s important to note that not all crops need to be planted in succession. While it’s true that you can plant most veggies in succession, this doesn’t apply to all of them. A good rule of thumb to remember is that in general leafy greens, root crops, annual herbs and legumes all work well for succession planting.
Starting a veggie garden is simpler than most people realize. While there are many different ways to do it, the simplest way is just to place 4 layers of cardboard on top of the ground, add a thick layer of compost and then plant directly into the compost. Add a layer of mulch on top with some fertiliser and water regularly. Within a short period, you will enjoy fresh, organic veggies from your garden!
